Occupational Therapists
Occupational Therapists help people to overcome physical,
psychological or social
problems arising from
illness or disability, by concentrating on what they are able to
achieve, rather than on their disability. The aim is to
provide a comprehensive service to enable people to remain as
independent as possible within the community.
Here are some examples of what occupational therapists techniques can help you with:
- Teaching you new ways of carrying out everyday tasks, such as getting in and out of the bath
- Working with you to regain confidence following time in hospital
- Energy conservation techniques to manage fatigue and improve your ability to carry out activities
- Training in falls prevention techniques which may include being aware of hazards in your home and what you can do to make it safer, for example, suggesting you lift loose rugs in case you trip
- Training in joint protection techniques to maintain range of movement and reduce strain on damaged joints
- Educating on positioning to promote normal movement patterns
- Training and supporting carers to assist with practical tasks, such as people handling techniques
