What is Care and Repair?
Care and Repair services offer independent advice and practical assistance to help you if you are a disabled or older homeowner aged 60 or over, to maintain, repair, improve or adapt your home so that you can continue living at home in your own community.
The service is available to owner-occupiers, tenants of private landlords and crofters who are aged 60 or over or who have a disability.
What services are provided?
Your local Care and Repair project does not carry out major work or provide the finance but their staff can:
- visit you at home
- advise on repairs, improvements and adaptations
- recommend local tradesmen from an approved contractor list
- help get competitive estimates for work
- help get surveys and drawings
- help you complete forms to get funding (may include grants from local authorities, benefits, equity release, home loans or charitable funds)
- help to organise and co-ordinate major works
- provide advice and support throughout the work, including dealing with the contractor
- help you resolve any problems due to disruption to your home or advice on alternative accommodation
- inspect the work carried out
Many also run Small Repair Services, and Handyperson Services that carry out very small jobs and only charge you for the cost of materials.
If your home needs larger repairs, for example, a ramp, then Care and Repair can help you to apply to your Local Authority for assistance. Part of the application requires you to have an Occupational Therapy assessment.
How do I apply?
You should contact your local Care and Repair Project. Details can be found below and on your local Council website. Care and Repair Scotland also has a list of local Care and Repair offices.
